Restoring the Ecosystem Before Planting
The Uyyalikuppam Mangrove Ecosystem Restoration Initiative near Kalpakkam in Chengalpattu district was developed around a fundamental ecological principle: successful mangrove restoration requires the restoration of suitable hydrological and habitat conditions, not merely the planting of saplings.
The Challenge
Degraded tidal channels and restricted water movement can affect the natural conditions required for mangrove establishment and survival. The initiative therefore focused on understanding the site, improving water connectivity and preparing suitable conditions for ecological restoration.
Field Intervention
Field-level work included site assessment, stakeholder coordination and restoration of water channels using a fish-bone style approach designed to improve tidal water movement across the restoration area.
Mechanical desilting and channel-development activities were undertaken over multiple days, involving more than 120 machine hours of field work.

The initiative represents a shift from event-based plantation towards an ecosystem-oriented restoration model where hydrology, site conditions, survival and long-term ecological outcomes are treated as core components of the project.
