Waterbody Rejuvenation: Why Desilting Alone Is Not Enough

Effective waterbody rejuvenation requires inflow, outflow, storage, ecology, safety and maintenance to be considered together.

A waterbody is a system

Removing accumulated silt can improve capacity, but desilting alone does not guarantee successful rejuvenation. Water sources, drainage, overflow, catchment conditions and future maintenance all influence long-term performance.

Plan the hydrology

Restoration should understand where water comes from, how long it remains, where excess water moves and whether surrounding development is affecting the catchment.

Protect ecological function

Where feasible, restoration should consider habitat, vegetation, water quality and biodiversity alongside engineering objectives.

Design for maintenance

A restored waterbody can decline again if waste, sediment and blocked inflows are not managed. Long-term stewardship should therefore be part of the original project design.
